Air Disc Brake Chamber Components

Disc brakes offer improved braking performance and control. However, they have become more expensive in recent years. They also have higher maintenance costs. They are only becoming more common in heavy-duty trucks.
Unlike drum brakes, air disc rotors do not expand away from the brake shoes, which increases the distance the shoes have to travel to apply the brake. This means less fade and more stopping power. But over time, they will need to be replaced.
An air disc caliper is the most complex part of the air disc brake system. It contains threaded pistons, an internal adjustment mechanism, and a slack adjuster. The slack adjuster rotates an S-cam that forces the lining against the brake drum.
Another air disc brake system component is a brake linkage. It includes a pushrod and a return spring that returns the pushrod to its original position when air pressure is released. The brake linkage must be adjusted at regular intervals. It is also possible to add a torque limiting device, which is a replaceable break-away adjuster.
Some brake systems include an electronic warning or wear indicator. These can be an easy way to check the condition of the brakes. Other manufacturers may use a torque limiting device, which limits the force that a brake caliper can apply.
Another part of an air disc brake system is an external breather tube. This vents air from inside the service chamber, reducing the entry of solid contaminants.
